A Growing Network of Independent Design Houses Now Builds Lutron's Control Intelligence Directly into Their Work
If you have considered a Lutron control system for your home's lighting and shading, you might be concerned that you are limited by the company’s style options, even though they are quite broad. If so, you might be interested in Lutron’s Native by Design program, which adds their automation intelligence directly into products from independent design houses. This broadens the designer lighting and shading options you might want for your Bountiful luxury home, not limited by Lutron's catalog. Launched at CEDIA Expo 2025 and still expanding, Native by Design makes an investment in Lutron control that much more valuable.

What "Native by Design" Means
Most smart home ecosystems handle third-party products the same way: certify them, write a driver, and hope the firmware stays in sync. That's compatibility. It works, mostly, until an update on one side breaks communication with the other, and now you're waiting on a service call to fix a curtain.
Native by Design goes deeper into integration. Lutron engineers sit down with each partner and build the actual hardware together, such as wireless antennas embedded in a fixture's ring rather than bolted on as a module, Ketra light engines wired in at the factory, and shade drives that are genuinely Lutron drives, not a motor wearing a Lutron-compatible badge.
The payoff is a system that works smoothly with nothing extra to program, so there is one less potential point of failure in your system a year from now.
Design Freedom Unlocked
With Native by Design, investing in a Lutron control system expands your design options. Want hand-blown glass fixtures instead of anything in a lighting catalog? Niche Modern builds those, with Lutron's technology inside. Prefer the sculptural, minimalist language of Spanish design? Vibia's fixtures run the same intelligence. Are you into sculptural ceramic pieces that look more like art than lighting? Ted Bradley Studio makes those by hand, wired for Lutron from the start. Artisan-woven shades in natural grasses and reeds, the kind that take a master weaver weeks to finish? Hartmann&Forbes and CONRAD both now build options specifically for Lutron control.
None of these companies makes the same things that Lutron itself produces. You have different style options, but each is still managed with the same app, keypads, and custom scenes as other Lutron offerings.
How It Plays in Your Home
The motorization side of the program is where this gets tangible. Leon builds moving art panels that slide open to reveal a hidden TV — and because the mechanism underneath is an actual Lutron shade drive, it behaves in your system exactly like any other Lutron shade. It uses the same programming and the same keypad, so you don’t have the potential of some other custom software that can fall out of sync with your system.
Shading Source uses that same drive to build fully custom Roman shades and drapery for a workroom's worth of fabric choices Lutron doesn't offer on its own. MerlinLight uses Lutron's lamp technology to build recessed framing projectors that precisely illuminate artwork while keeping UV exposure low enough for sensitive pieces.
Three products with different designs and uses, all using the same tried-and-true Lutron control system technology.
Keep an Eye on This
Native by Design is still growing with new partners joining again at the recently concluded CEDIA 2026 show, and Lutron shows no sign of slowing down. For homeowners, that means the list of design houses building into your system only gets longer. We'll be spotlighting more partners in upcoming posts.
