RGB Is the Next Great TV Tech Upgrade
Every few years, a TV technology comes along that actually changes what's possible instead of just adding a marketing label. Sony's new True RGB TVs are one of those moments. What Does True RGB Do?
Mini LED TVs create color the hard way. By that, we mean that white or blue LEDs shine through a color filter, which converts that light into red, green, and blue, an extra step that loses some purity and brightness along the way. True RGB skips all that. Thousands of individually controlled red, green, and blue LEDs sit directly behind the panel, producing each primary color at the source instead of filtering it from another color.
Sony controls each of those LEDs with 22-bit precision per color, which is a lot of fine-grained dimming control packed into a small space. A new Color Shift processing layer tackles a known challenge with RGB backlights: color crosstalk between neighboring LEDs. The result is purer color, higher peak brightness, and a picture that holds up better when you're not sitting dead-center in front of the screen.
Two Decades in the Making
Sony isn't new to RGB. The company traces True RGB's lineage back to the RGB laser light source in its 2004 Qualia 005, then 2016's Backlight Master Drive, two decades of incremental steps toward exactly this kind of backlight. That history shows up in the processing stack surrounding it: RGB Triluminos Max handles color, Luminance Booster Pro pushes brightness, and a Sensing and Feedback engine reads ambient light in the room and adjusts the picture in real time. X-Wide Angle Pro widens the sweet spot so the couch doesn't have to face the screen head-on.
All of it runs through Sony's renowned XR Processor, using AI scene analysis to fine-tune color and contrast frame by frame. Other TV makers are shipping their first RGB backlights this year. Sony's shipping its fourth or fifth attempt.
The RGB Lineup
True RGB currently lives in two Sony series. The BRAVIA 9 II is the flagship, running from 65 up to a genuinely massive 115 inches. The BRAVIA 7 II covers a more common 55 to 98 inches. Both are also available in PRO versions, which add an extended warranty with advance replacement, Enhanced Voice Zoom 3 for clearer dialogue, and bundled Sony Pictures Core movie credits are nice extras if you're already leaning toward the higher tier.
You should know that the entry-level BRAVIA 3 II doesn't get True RGB at all. This is a step-up technology for Sony's upper lineup, not something that trickles down to every screen size and price point. If True RGB is the draw, the model number matters as much as the size.
How It Stacks Up
Samsung calls its version Micro RGB. Sony calls it True RGB. Both are the same core idea wearing different marketing. So you know, neither is actual MicroLED, a far more expensive self-emissive (the way the pixels light) category entirely. The comparison that probably matters most to homeowners is True RGB versus OLED, and it comes down to your room and priorities. True RGB delivers brighter visuals, holds up better in sun-filled living rooms, comes in genuinely huge sizes up to 115 inches, and carries no burn-in risk. OLED still wins in a dark, dedicated theater room, where its per-pixel black levels create a kind of contrast RGB backlighting can't quite match. Neither is the "wrong" choice—it's a question of where the TV lives and what you use it for.
