It’s Time to Update Your Control4 System & Keep Your Smart Home Connected

If you’ve been living in a Control4 household for a while, you’ve likely enjoyed how it pulls your world together. But technology moves fast, and even the most reliable systems eventually need a refresh.

Control4 has officially announced that OS2, the operating system that’s been the backbone of many homes since 2010, is being phased out.

While your Control4 system won't suddenly go dark, the way you interact with it is about to change. Here is the plain-and-simple breakdown of what’s happening, when, and why… and why this is actually a great opportunity to elevate your home’s IQ.

The Deadline: August 2026

Control4 will retire remote access and cloud services for home systems running OS2 on August 4, 2026. This is a phased wind-down, but the first major milestone already passed: on August 5, 2025, Control4 disabled 4Sight auto-renewals for OS2 customers. This is their way of ensuring you don’t pay for a service that will eventually stop working on your current hardware.

What System Am I Using?

Unsure which version of Control4 your house is running on? Visit your controller’s registration page or contact your integrator through the Customer Portal. If you moved into a house that included a Control4 system and you’re unsure, or if you’re between integrators, Show & Tell AV in Park City, UT, is here to help

What Stops Working?

It’s important to note that local control at home (i.e. tapping a wall keypad to turn on the lights or using a dedicated remote in your theater) will still work just fine with OS2. However, anything that requires the cloud on OS2 will disappear after November 1, 2026. This includes:

  • Remote Access: You won't be able to check your cameras or unlock the door from the app while you're away.
  • Intercom Anywhere: No more receiving doorbell calls on your phone.
  • Voice Control: Integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Home will cease.
  • Smart Alerts: You'll stop receiving remote push notifications or emails for things like water leaks or security triggers.

Why the Change?

OS2 was built for a different era. Since its launch, the standards for cybersecurity, cloud processing power, and device integration have evolved. To give you the features you actually want today, like fluid high-res video and deep Apple integration, the underlying platform had to mature.

The Bright Side: Welcome to X4

This isn't just about avoiding a service cutoff; it’s about a massive upgrade in how your home feels. The new Control4 X4 is a total shift in philosophy. It includes:

  • Homeowner Empowerment: You no longer need to call us for every small tweak. You can create your own "Routines" and schedules directly from the interface.
  • Apple Ecosystem: X4 plays incredibly well with Apple, allowing you to launch Control4 scenes via Siri, Apple Watch, or even CarPlay as you pull into your driveway.
  • Modern Interface: It’s faster, looks beautiful on T4 touchscreens, and organizes your most-used features so they're always front and center.

How We Get You There

Moving from OS2 to X4 often requires more than just a software update. If your system is still running on legacy HC-series controllers (like the HC-250 or HC-800), those pieces of hardware simply don’t have the horsepower to run the modern OS.

The good news? Replacing these with the new CORE Series home controllers significantly boosts your system’s speed and reliability. We can review your current rack, identify which pieces are ‘legacy,’ and map out a clean transition that keeps your favorite features intact.
